How the data actually flows

When you click Improve or Translate, here is exactly what happens:

There is no TidyText server in that chain. No proxy, no middleware, no logging layer. The request goes from your browser to your chosen AI provider using your own API key. TidyText never sees it.

Your API key is stored in your browser's localStorage — the same mechanism used to save website preferences. It is Base64-encoded and never transmitted to any server other than your chosen AI provider.

What TidyText does not collect

• No account required. You do not create a username, set a password, or provide an email address — ever.
• No text stored on our servers. We do not have servers that receive your text. Zero. The architecture makes this structurally impossible.
• No cookies. TidyText uses localStorage only — your API key and theme preference. No tracking cookies, no session identifiers, no cross-site data.
• No analytics. No Google Analytics, no Mixpanel, no pixel tracking. No third-party script sees your usage.
• No training on your data. TidyText does not use your text to train or improve any model. Your API provider's own terms govern how they handle prompts — check Gemini, OpenAI, or Anthropic's policies directly.
• No subscription, no payment data. There is no billing system. No card details, no payment processor integration of any kind.

Writers handling sensitive material

Journalists, lawyers, therapists, researchers — anyone whose drafts contain information that must not leave their control. When you paste into a conventional AI writing tool, you are handing that text to a company you may not have read the terms of. With TidyText, the text goes to the AI provider you already chose and trust, and nowhere else.

Non-native writers who need to improve text online without signing up

Many no-login writing tools offer a few free uses and then demand an account. TidyText does not have a free tier that runs out. The tool is the same on your hundredth use as your first, because there is nothing to limit. Bring your own Gemini key — it's free for light use — and improve text in any of 44 languages without creating an account.

Developers and technical users who want to inspect what's happening

TidyText is a single HTML file with no minification, no obfuscation, and no external dependencies. Every prompt is in the PROMPTS object, readable in plain text. You can verify exactly what instruction is sent alongside your text. No black box, no hidden system prompts.

Teams sharing a device or account

Because there is no account, there is no shared login to manage, no permissions system, no risk of one user seeing another's history. Each session is isolated to the browser tab it runs in.

How TidyText compares on privacy

The honest tradeoff

The BYOK model means you need an API key from Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, or another supported provider. Getting a free Gemini API key takes about two minutes and costs nothing for light use. But it is a step that conventional tools skip by handling the API themselves and charging you a subscription for the privilege.

If you want a tool that requires no setup at all, TidyText is not the right fit. If you want a writing tool where you control the data, the model, and the cost — it is.
