How the data actually flows

When you click Improve or Translate, here is exactly what happens:

There is no TidyText server in that chain. No proxy, no middleware, no logging layer. The request goes from your browser to your chosen AI provider using your own API key. TidyText never sees it.

The provider does see it. It processes your text, and may keep or review it, under its own terms. That part is between you and the provider — so which provider and which plan you use matters (see Choosing a provider below).

Your API key is stored in your browser's localStorage — the same mechanism used to save website preferences. It is Base64-encoded (not encrypted) and never sent anywhere except your chosen AI provider. Your last 20 results are saved there too, so they're waiting when you come back.

What TidyText does not collect

• No account required. You do not create a username, set a password, or provide an email address — ever.
• No text on TidyText servers. We do not have servers that receive your text. Your history is saved only in your own browser, where you can delete it.
• No cookies. TidyText uses localStorage only — your key, settings and recent history. No tracking cookies, no session identifiers, no cross-site data.
• No tracking. No Google Analytics, no Mixpanel, no pixels. We measure visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which sets no cookies and doesn't receive the text you write.
• No training by TidyText. We never receive your text, so we can't train on it. Your provider's terms decide what happens there — on Google's free Gemini tier, Google may use it to improve its products (outside the UK, EEA and Switzerland).
• No subscription, no payment data. There is no billing system. No card details, no payment processor integration of any kind.

Who this is built for

Writers who want to choose who sees their text

With a conventional AI writing tool, your text goes to that company and then usually on to an AI provider as well. With TidyText, it goes only to the provider you pick, on the plan you pick. For sensitive or confidential material, use a provider and plan whose terms exclude your data from training and human review — not Google's free tier, which Google itself says is not for sensitive information.

Non-native writers who need to improve text online without signing up

Many no-login writing tools offer a few free uses and then demand an account. TidyText doesn't: the tool is the same on your hundredth use as your first. Bring your own API key and improve text in any of 44 languages without creating a TidyText account. Google's Gemini API has a free tier, but check Google's terms first — you must be 18 or over, in the UK, EEA and Switzerland we recommend a paid key, and Google describes the API as for professional or business use, not consumer use, which a paid key doesn't change.

Developers and technical users who want to inspect what's happening

TidyText is a single HTML file with no minification and no obfuscation. The only other services it contacts are your AI provider, Google Fonts and Cloudflare (hosting and cookieless analytics). Every prompt is in the PROMPTS object, readable in plain text, so you can verify exactly what is sent alongside your text.

A note on shared devices

Because your key and history are saved in the browser, anyone using the same browser profile can see them. On a shared or work computer, use Settings → Clear All Data when you finish.

Choosing a provider

Before you use a Gemini key: you must be 18 or over, and Google describes the Gemini API as being for developers building for professional or business purposes, not for consumer use — so check that your use fits Google's terms. On Google's free tier, Google may use what you send to improve its products and human reviewers may read it, so don't paste sensitive, confidential or personal text. If you're in the UK, the EEA or Switzerland, Google says it applies its paid-tier data terms to free usage instead — but its terms also say only paid services may be used for apps made available to users there, so in those regions we recommend a key from a Google Cloud project with billing turned on. A paid key doesn't change Google's statement about consumer use. Read Google's Gemini API terms for the full details.

How TidyText AI handles your writing

The honest tradeoff

The BYOK model means you need an API key from Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, or another supported provider. Getting a Gemini API key takes about two minutes; Google offers a free tier, though in the UK, EEA and Switzerland we recommend its paid tier — and either way, check that your use fits Google's terms. But it is a step that conventional tools skip by handling the API themselves and charging you a subscription for the privilege.

If you want a tool that requires no setup at all, TidyText is not the right fit. If you want a writing tool where you control the data, the model, and the cost — it is.
